Question

How do I force TurboTax to include federal form 4684 with my state return? (My state return was rejected for missing federal form 4684.)

Fill out the casualty and theft section of TurboTax. It is in the federal section for deductions and credits. Scroll down to Other Deductions and Credits.

See About Form 4684, Casualties and Thefts for more help.

Hi,

I did fill that out. However, Turbo Tax is not submitting that form with my state taxes. So California is rejecting my return saying that a copy of that federal form is required.

Thanks,

Double-check that there are no missing data fields in the federal Casualty and Theft section.

I noticed in a quick trial with my software that when I left out the date (inadvertently), the form didn't populate but the number for the loss generated quickly, and no error appeared. It appears if any item is blank (even one not necessary to properly calculate your loss), the form does not generate.

When I reviewed the worksheet that creates the form, I could see the error (something you cannot see in the online program).

If all of the data is present, this should force the form over.  Let us know after a second review if the error persists for you.

You can look for the form before e-filing by selecting the option to view your forms just before filing or by visiting the Print Center in the Tools menu (on the left of the screen.)
