Are you the landlord or the tenant?  If you are the landlord you need to use online Premier--and you are posting from the Free Edition.

if you are a tenant :

RENT

There is not a rent deduction or credit on your Federal return.  If your state has anything for renters you will be prompted to enter your rent info when you complete your state return.  As far as I know, the states that have anything for rent are Arizona, California, Connecticut, Hawaii, Indiana, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island, Vermont, Washington DC, and Wisconsin.

You may be able to deduct up to $3,000 of the rent paid on your Indiana home. You may be able to take this deduction if:

  • You paid rent on your principal place of residence, AND,
  • The place you rented was subject to Indiana property tax.

Follow these steps:

  • Click on State down the left side of the screen.
  • At the screen Status of your state returns, click Edit to the right of the Indiana tax return.
  • At the screen Your 2020 Indiana taxes…., click Edit to the right of Income and deductions.
  • At the screen Here’s the income ……, click Start to the right of Renters Deduction.
