I have one, but we need one for her as well due to her father using her as a dependent and committing tax fraud.

I've tried multiple times I usually receive my children's ip pin in December nothing this year I was told I have to mail my return which I know is gonna take forever

For you to claim your depended if another parent already claimed her on his return is the only choice. Please don't forget to file Form 8332 to revoke the rights of the other parent with your return.

If I am experiencing this issue but im unsure if it was identity theft or an estranged father who has not seen my child in almost 10 years would my only option be to paper file?

I have two children and don’t remember seeing the IP pin in the mail.  I retrieved a pin online through some sort of e-verification.  Is this the IP Pin and is the IP pin typically the same number for both children?

@macuser_22 Why are all the helpers here linking a page that only refers to an individual's IP pin, not their dependents?

The link only generates an IP pin for the taxpayer. There are also no instructions for how to generate an IP pin for a dependent, nor how to retrieve one if you have not received one by mail after filing:
    - 14039 ID Theft Affidavit and

    - 15227 - Application for IP Pin

If you feel the link you posted is correct for obtaining an IP Pin for a DEPENDENT, please provide additional instructions for how to use the site specifically for a claimed dependent and not the taxpayer.

The  IRS Identity Protection (IP) PIN is a six-digit number assigned to eligible taxpayers and their dependents to help prevent the misuse of their Social Security number on fraudulent federal income tax returns. You can use the IRS online tool Get an IP PIN or visit Retrieve Your IP PIN for more information.

I've read all the posts on this thread, but you all fail to realize that the IRS IP PIN number form that you keep quoting only applies to the person requesting it. I need to get one for my daughter. I lived in the same house as my daughter lives for 9 months of 2020. I paid all the utilities, rent, etc. while living there. When I moved out on September 28th, I continued to pay all the utilities, rent etc till October 31. Then I moved to my own place and started paying child support and alimony payments required by the State of Pa.

I claimed my daughter as a dependent as I've lived in the same house as she has for all of her life. I've been legally separated from her mother since Jan. 1, 2019. I've claimed her as my dependent for the past 3 years on my taxes, while the divorce proceedings drag on. I've received the Child Stimulus check every time they've sent it out.

This year the ex in a more determined way to extract more money from me in any way she possibly can fraudulently (I believe) claimed our daughter on her taxes for 2020 and she filed her taxes before me. She makes less than half of what I bring home yearly (which was the reason why I want a divorce, even though she has two college degrees, she refuses to get a job and I'm tired of working three jobs for the last 30 years to make ends meet). So when I used TurboTax again this year, I e-filed and it was rejected because they said someone (HER) already claimed my daughter on their taxes. I had to print out the taxes I filled out with TurboTax and mail them in and that was 2 months ago.

I read somewhere, either here on TurboTax or online that if I have a copy of her birth certificate (which I do) and I'm listed as the father, have her SSN (which I do), her name, etc. that I can obtain an IP PIN number so that I can prove that my daughter is rightfully mine.

After reading everything I can here and at IRS.GOV, I should qualify for the Custodial parent for 2020 as I lived in the same house for more than 6 months and I make more money than her mother. The only thing against me is that she filed her taxes before I did (which is odd, because in most of the years we were married and living together (and she does have a degree in accounting) she could never get all of the information together before April 15th so we always had to file an extension).

    So, my questions are:

    1. Is it possible for me to obtain an IP PIN number for my daughter to prevent my soon to be Ex or anyone else from claiming my daughter?

1a. What link can you provide me that takes me right to that page so that I can actually put in my                                daughters information and send off a copy of her birth certificate?

    2. Do you think I stand a chance to be the custodial parent for my daughter?

    3. Since I no longer live in the same house as my daughter, but I pay child support and alimony and her mother's car payment (which is in my name, but I let her use it) and all the bills that she racked up with the credit cards that she took out in my name (Unknown to me till I read my credit reports); can I claim her next year and every year till she turns 18?

    Thanks for any help

So were you then able to file and get your return?

    March 16, 2021

Now you get it immediately online.  No more mailing a letter.

How do you request a pin for a minor ? When I tried to set up an ID account for my child and send his verification ID they declined saying he doesn’t meet the age requirement for an account? Therefore I wasn’t able to get the pin so do I have to mail a request?

    February 2, 2022

Here is a link to the IRS website to get an IP Pin.

The IRS does not inform you of who was using the SSN fraudulently.

Same with me.  I’ve had pins on my kids for 7 years.  Last two years I have not received them and it’s looking like I will need to paper file this year like I did last year.  Very frustrating that the only way to retrieve this info is via USPS.  Not sure why I haven’t been getting them either.  No way around it.  They say they have an opt out option in the works for this year and I will be first in line!  PIA to paper file.

The IP PIN is a six-digit number that the IRS assigns to victims of tax-related identity theft. If you know you need an IP PIN to file your taxes and you lost your CP01A letter (or never received it), you can:

Retrieve your IP PIN online at the IRS's Get an IP PIN site; or

Call the IRS at 1-800-908-4490 to have your IP PIN mailed to you (this can take up to 21 days)

We're unable to issue IP PINs, and you won't find them on your tax paperwork. You can only get IP PINs from the IRS.

My husband and I have had his two children age 16 & 14 living with us full time for the past two years. Last year we did not claim either of the children trying to help the biological mother out a bit. The biological mother probably sees these children maybe 5x a year, she has not provided a penny towards any type of care for these children, I am not able to get assistance for them because she receives it even though they live and have lived with us for two years (yes I’ve tried to fit this with no success) so this year we told the biological mother that I am claiming the children as they have lived with us full time and she has provided no type of support or assistance. The biological mother told me she has a court order from 2013 saying she has “full custody” there for she is claiming them! After researching IRS guidelines the person who the children has lived with is the one who should claim them, so I did. The biological mother is a terrible person who uses these children as a paycheck, she is a compulsive liar filled with empty threats usually. I filed my return already and it was accepted, not yet approved- the biological mother now tells us she put a “pin” on the children’s social security numbers. I don’t know how true this is but, what can I do if she did put a pin and my taxes are not approved? It’s not fair that she rep the financial benefits for children I have literally struggled taking care of. Any advice would be appreciated! Thank you.
