To open .tax2017 data files, you would need to use the TurboTax CD/Download product. You may also try to use the amendment software to open .tax2017 data files: https://turbotax.intuit.com/personal-taxes/cd-download/amend/. However, if you used TurboTax Online to file your tax return(s), you should not need open your .tax2017 data file because you should be able to amend your tax return(s) using TurboTax Online, if necessary.

Regarding amended tax return(s), if you have not received the refund(s) you originally filed for or paid taxes owed, then you should wait until those transaction(s) occur because the IRS and/or state department(s) of revenue may determine the change(s) you need to make and may not want you to file amended tax return(s) and instead, may provide instructions how they want you to proceed.

Furthermore, TurboTax begins calculating amended tax refund(s) or taxes owed based on the assumption you already received the refund(s) you originally filed for or paid taxes owed. Thus, if you don't actually receive the original refund(s) you filed for or need to adjust the amount(s), please keep that in mind when you amend your tax return(s). It depends.

Are you trying to open a prior year tax file in the online program?

If so, you can't.  The online program is only for the 2019 tax return.

If you need to open a 2017 tax file, you will need to download the 2017 tax program onto your desktop.  See the attached for more information on downloading the prior year program.

Please see the section titled To amend your 2017 or 2016 return for specific instructions.
