OPTION #1 - OPT OUT OF IP PIN  ( Updated  2025 )

At the bottom of the IRS FAQ,  I found that you have can OPT OUT of receiving your IP PIN.

Login in IRS..gov > Upper right click on  Profile  > Go to the bottom of the page to > Identity Protection PIN > Copy this years code (just in case) > then click OPT OUT > Confirm.

I was able to successfully do so and it takes 72 hours.

Q23. Can I opt-out of the IP PIN program? (updated Dec. 20, 2024)

A23. Yes, if you voluntarily joined the IP PIN program and have not been a victim of tax-related identity theft, then you may opt-out of the IP PIN program. To find out if you are eligible to opt-out, please log into your online account. If you enrolled into the program though the one-time enrollment option, you will be opted out of the program at the end of the calendar year.

OPTION # 2  - RETRIEVE YOUR CURRENT  IP PIN

If your return was rejected for the IP PIN,  try these steps.

If you had previously created an online account and obtained an IP PIN,

Log in to ID.me until you get to the welcome page for IDme + IRS.

You may need to verify your identity again due to extended security.

Then use IRS online tool Get an IP PIN  (Blue Button) to retrieve your current IP PIN.

No need to have it mailed, this service runs during tax time only I believe.

Once you have your current IP PIN go back to Turbotax and resubmit your rejected tax return.

If you do not yet have an account on IRS.gov, you will be asked to sign up for an account

and validate your identity.  Register below the login part of  ID.me then do the online tool above.

If you can't recover your IP PIN online, you can call [phone number removed]

(( unfortunately Turbotax removed the 1 800 I included ))  Its on the How to get your IP PIN reissued

A service representative will verify your identity and mail your IP PIN to the address that appears on our files within 21 days.

Please follow the directions below to remove the IP PIN option.

  1. Open your return if you don't already have it open.
  2. Inside TurboTax, search for IP PIN (don't forget the space) and then select the Jump to link in the search results.
  3. On the Identity Protection PIN screen, answer Yes and enter your IP PIN in the space provided.
    • If you need to remove the IP PIN, answer No instead.

I am having the same issue as the first poster.

I followed these very same directions to remove the IP PIN, everytime I e-refile I receive an email saying my return is rejected. Why? If I am answering no to the IP PIN question is my return still being rejected.

Unfortunately, if you requested an IP PIN from the IRS in the past, you cannot bypass entering the PIN by selecting no.  You must enter your PIN or file your return by paper.

You can retrieve your PIN from the IRS by following these instructions.

I am having a similar issue. I forgot my IPIN, (5digit pin). it doesn't give me an option to reset. Why has this become a mandatory step to e-File? I called IRS as well, they stated this 5 digit pin is something that's required for turbo tax, not an IRS requirement.

IF anyone knows how to reset please help. Unfortunately, I bought the disk, but I can't e-file, as I don't remember my pin.

Do you mean your Self Select PIN?  This PIN is 5 digits and is something you create each year that acts as a digital signature.  For more details on the Self Select PIN vs the IP PIN, please see the Help Article here.

Once you have a IP PIN it can't be removed from the IRS.
