Question

How do I report a wage claim payment I received in 2022 from a former employer through the Texas Workforce Commission?

My former employer did not pay me for work I did in 2021. I filed a wage claim against my former employer with the TX Workforce Commission under the TX Payday Law. TWC found in my favor & ordered the company to pay my back wages in full to TWC, who then sent me a check for the total amount of wages owed to me in 2022.

     From @ToddL9:

Since you only received a check (not a Form 1099-MISC), you can enter the amount as Other Reportable Income

This avoids the need to use either the 1099-MISC interview or the Business Income features of higher versions of TurboTax.

    • Go to the  Income and Expenses
    • Less Common Income
    • Miscellaneous Income
    • Other Reportable Income, for the description, enter "Settlement"

Or enter "other reportable income in the Search Box  and select "jump to other reportable income". These payments are NOT wages).

This income will appear on Line 8, Form 1040.
