Question

How do I report my 1099G if it was for 2021, but didn't get the payments until 2022?

Since the IRS was not working for Covid reasons, I didn't get my unemployment payment until early 2022.

What 1099G are you talking about?

Were you unemployed in 2021?   Did you receive unemployment compensation during 2021?   Or did the state pay the unemployment later---in early 2022?   Please explain.

Did you receive a 2021 1099G for unemployment?   Or did you receive a 1099G for something else--like a state or local tax refund?

Not sure what you mean by the "IRS was not working...."   They were working---but with delays.  And unemployment did not come from the IRS.  Unemployment comes from your state.

What are you trying to do with the 1099G?

The unemployment you received for 2021 was paid by your state and it is assumed you received it in 2021.

The IRS did not pay you your unemployment compensation, they simply allowed a reduction in the unemployment compensation that you paid tax on that was included on the 2021 tax return.  If your original return was filed before the $10,200 allowed deduction, then they automatically changed your tax return to reduce the taxable portion without requiring an amended return.

Once completed they would have issued a refund to you if that was the end result after the correction.

The IRS may have had to pay you interest on that refund and if so, then the interest you received is taxable income and must be reported on the tax return if you received a Form 1099-INT for 2021.
