UPDATED FOR TAX YEAR 2019

If your parents have claimed you as a dependent, you must still file a return if:

  • Your unearned income (interest, dividends, etc.) is over $1,100;
  • Your earned income (from a job) is over $12,200 or more;
  • Your income was from self-employment [issued a 1099-MISC and not a W-2] and is $400 or more; or
  • You want to get back any taxes withheld.

You can include that you are claimed as a dependent in the Personal Info section of TurboTax:

  1. Click on the Personal Info tab.
  2. Click on Edit next to your name.
  3. On the screen,Your personal info, in #3 click on the Yes radio button under:
  • Someone else can claim me as a dependent on their tax return; and
  • And this person will claim me on their 2019 tax return.
