How much is the deduction for claiming my son who lives in another state? He has not received his SSDI, will claming him affect his obtaining approval?

By claiming your son as a dependent, you will be reduce the amount of money that gets taxed on your return by $4,050 (2016). He doesn't need to live with you to claim him as a dependent. His SSDI shouldn't be affected by you claiming him.

In the future, do not list the dependent's Social Security disability as income anywhere on your tax return. You do not receive the benefits; the dependent does. Even if the Social Security disability income is paid to you on behalf of your child or relative, the money is meant to support the dependent.
