Your unemployment compensation is taxable income, just like your wages would be if you had a job reporting income on a W-2.

You should receive a Form 1099-G from the unemployment agency that paid you.  It will either be mailed to you or it may be available to you online.  The Form 1099-G is entered into your tax return in a similar manner to entering a W-2.

When you get your Form 1099-G, use these steps to go to the section of your return to enter the information:

  • On the top row of the TurboTax online screen, click on Search (or for CD/downloaded TurboTax locate the search box in the upper right corner)
  • This opens a box where you can type in “unemployment” and click the magnifying glass (or for CD/downloaded TurboTax, click Find)
  • The search results will give you an option to “Jump to unemployment
  • Click on the blue “Jump to unemployment” link to get started
