HOW TO FILE EXTENSION ONLINE WHEN SPOUSE ALREADY WENT ONLINE AND MADE A PAYMENT?

I was planning on doing the tax payment when I filed the extension.  However, he went online and set up his short-term payment plan before I had filed the extension.  If I go online and try to file it, it of course wants me to make a payment or set up the payment plan. If I do make another payment and enter his same info, will it take out payments twice?  Is there a way to just file the extension without a payment?  Thanks!

You can file an extension without making a payment.  For instructions on various ways to file an extension see:  How do I file an IRS tax extension?

If your spouse went to IRS.gov and made a 2024 Extension Payment, the IRS considers making that payment the filing of an extension as well.

TurboTax wants you to make a payment/set up the payment plan.  Paper copy of course is too slow.  I was going to do an Extension Payment at https://directpay.irs.gov/directpay, but he informed me this morning he had gone out and set up his plan.  I handle the taxes and was expecting him to just let me know how he was going to do the payments.  I'm not so sure making the payment alone would count as an extension because they give you the option to do an Extension Payment, or to just pay Estimated Tax.

I will try the directpay site and just make another payment.  It looks like that will work (except the system keeps experiencing technical difficulties).  UPDATE:  I was able to make the Extension/Payment on the directpay site.

If you make payments directly to IRS and not with an extension, record the additional payments in TurboTax in the Federal section under Deductions and Credits, Additional Payments under Estimated Tax Payments. That way, your return will show the correct balance due or refund when you are ready to file.

In TurboTax Online:

  1. Go to Deductions & Credits
  2. Select Estimated Tax Payments
  3. Click Start or Revisit next to Federal estimated taxes for 2024
  4. Scroll down to Additional Payments
  5. Enter the Date Paid and Amount Paid
