How to fix tax return already filed.

I filed my taxes in february and got my refund paid taxes on my unemployment and now i see this now covid law passed friday says the first 10k is not federally taxable how on gods green earth do we correct this so we can get our tax money back we was not supposed to pay really.

good question but the IRS has not posted guidelines for what a filer should do.

Then the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) will have to update their systems to take into account the change in tax law for fiscal year 2020 tax filings. You would then be able to file an amended tax return to retrieve any money already paid or see if you would have gotten more money back than you did.

It is important to remember that you must file your original tax return and/or pay the IRS before 15 April to avoid any fines, or interest if you underpaid the agency. This includes if you file for an extension to your tax return.

 

one wonders why the IRS can't automatically correct filed returns for this. 

 

 

also Turbotax will have to update its programming to allow for filing of an amended return.
