My spouse has a Family, High Deductible Health Plan and HSA that we share through her work.

I also have an personal HSA which had no contributions or deductions during calendar year 2020 (therefore no 1099).

I have made contributions to my HSA since the beginning of calendar year 2021 and before May 17, 2021.

With no 1099 for my account, how and where in TurboTax 2020 do I enter my contributions?

“We” don’t have an HSA and you don’t share an HSA.  Each HSA has a single owner.  You and your spouse will have to run the HSA interview twice.  When you indicate you have an HSA, it will ask who it belongs to.  If you made contributions to your account for the 2020 tax year, run the interview, indicate it was your account, then answer the questions.  You will also have to start the interview a second time for your spouse’s account.

Use the following steps to go to the Health Savings Account (HSA) section of your return.  When you indicate that both you and your spouse have HSAs, there will be a series of questions asked that will allow you to enter your contributions that you made to your account as well as verify that you were eligible to make those contributions based on your High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP) coverage.  As mentioned by Champ Opus 17, pay close attention to the screen to be sure you are answering questions about the correct person, you or your spouse.

    • On the top row of the TurboTax online screen, click on Search (or for CD/downloaded TurboTax locate the search box in the upper right corner)
    • This opens a box where you can type in “hsa” (be sure to enter exactly as shown here) and click the magnifying glass (or for CD/downloaded TurboTax, click Find)
    • The search results will give you an option to “Jump to hsa
    • Click on the blue “Jump to hsa” link and enter your information
