Question

I accidentally paid $250 in estimated tax payment march 2020, but my taxes are taken out of paycheck. Can I claim that on my 2019 return? It's in my account for next yr.

If you made a payment on the IRS web site you either selected "2020 estimated taxes" or "2019 tax return."

If you mailed a paper check with a 1040-V voucher form, it either said 2019 or 2020 in the top right corner.

If you made  2020 payment, you can't count it as a 2019 payment on your 2019 tax return, the IRS will see that as an underpayment and send you a bill for the difference with interest.

The payment was made in 2020, so you have to claim it on a 2020 return. It cannot be claimed for your 2019 return.

Here's how to enter this information next year:

To enter, edit or delete estimated taxes paid (Federal, State, Local) -

  • Click on Federal Taxes (Personal using Home and Business)
  • Click on Deductions and Credits
  • Click on I'll choose what I work on (if shown)
  • Scroll down to Estimates and Other Taxes Paid
  • On Estimates, click on the start or update button
