Question

I am 21 and was a dependent on my parents return in '19 but am not in '20. Will get $1,800 from stimulus when I file '20. How can I make sure I get the 3rd stimulus?

Until I file 2020 taxes, I don't think I am considered eligible because I was a dependent in 2019.  If I file now, will the IRS catch that I am now eligible?  Is it possible that Turbo Tax will account for my situation at some point before April 15th?  Is it better to file now or wait?

If you are filing independently for 2020 and meet the qualifications for the first and second payments then those payments will be added to your tax return as a Recovery Rebate Credit.

Generally, if you were a U.S. citizen or U.S. resident alien in 2020, were not a dependent of another taxpayer and have a Social Security number that is valid for employment, you are eligible for the Recovery Rebate Credit.  Your credit amount will be reduced if your adjusted gross income (AGI) is more than:

  • $150,000 if married and filing a joint return or filing as a qualifying widow or widower
  • $112,500 if filing as head of household or
  • $75,000 for eligible individuals filing as a single or as married filing separately.

Your payment will be reduced by 5% of the amount by which your AGI exceeds the applicable threshold above.

The best way to find out whether the IRS will be sending a third stimulus payment is to use the Get My Payment tool.

The sooner you file, the sooner the IRS will have your information for the third payment and the sooner you will receive your first two payments.
