Are you referring to a credit made available by your state of residence?  What state are you referring to?  Please clarify.

You can get the First Responder Credit on your IA taxes for serving in a volunteer status.  If serve in a paid status but also as a volunteer you can still qualify in certain circumstances.

For example, you are hired as an EMS person in one department and then volunteer in another department.  Or, you are employed in some other capacity in a department and volunteer as an EMS person.

Here is a link for reference.

If you qualify you can make the entry by "Updating" the "Tax and Credits" section in the IA state return interview. You will enter the number of months you volunteered and the $250 credit will be prorated.
