The requirements for HOH are different than those to claim a dependent.

No your friend cannot file as Head of Household. Although he supports you he is not a blood relative so cannot use either of you as the kind of dependents who qualify him as HOH. But if you had less than $4150 of income (not including SS), then you can be claimed as a dependent for the $500 credit for other dependents
