Question

I am filing my 16 year olds return as my dependent and it is asking for my SS and taxible income under "Childs Income (Under age 24)". Why is this needed?

She made approx $14000 for the year and paid approx $1300 in Fed taxes.  When I put in my taxable income it brings her tax due up to $3k.

You do NOT enter a dependent child's earned income from wages reported on a W-2 or from self-employment on your tax return.  The dependent can file their own tax return and must indicate on their tax return that they can be claimed as a dependent.

If the child did not have any unearned  income, interest, dividends or capital gains,  or the unearned income was $2,200 or less, you do not use the section for Child's Income (Under age 24).
