Question

I am forced to restart my taxes as it says I must do deluxe. Why won’t it let me remain of free service? And why is there no option to remain in free service?

The option to remain in free services is not an option listed and it says in order to continue I have to do $60 deluxe one, I don’t want deluxe.

The TurboTax Free edition only supports simple tax returns that do not require any additional schedules. More complex tax returns will require Deluxe or higher depending on the forms that are needed.

You might be able to use the Free File (formally called Freedom Edition) for incomes under $72,000 (or $39,000 with the TurboTax version) and supports all states and most forms.

The Free File is part of the IRS Free File alliance and is totally separate from TurboTax website.

You can also access the Free File tax alliance programs via the IRS website.

TT Free only includes the basic forms.  If you need additional ones or schedules, you are prompted to upgrade.   Situations not covered in TurboTax Free Edition include:

  • Itemized deductions
  • Business or 1099-NEC income
  • Stock sales
  • Rental property income
  • Credits, deductions and income reported on schedules 1-3, such as the Student Loan Interest Deduction
