I am getting way more back for my tax refund than last year and I didn’t even work half the year.... did I do something wrong?

Without looking at your return it is impossible to know why.

Do you have children?  You could be eligible for more earned income credit that in the past.  This is an income based credit and is on a bell curve.  Sometimes the more you make, the less you get and the less you make, the more you get.  Make sure your withholding listed in box 2 of your W2's don't have an extra digit or transposed number.

These are the most common things that effect your refund:

  • Change in Filing Status;
  • Change in dependents claimed;
  • No longer have a child, under age 17, to claim the Child Tax Credit
  • The amount of federal and/or state withholding;
  • Income based credits, such as the Earned Income credit;
  • Tax bracket changes
