Question

I am not self employed, but I have 1099-MISC non employee compensation of more than $400, do I still file for tax?

My daughter worked in the summer as tennis official and earned $2,400 (reported on 1099-MISC box 7), based on the requirements she does not come under self employed, her total income is less than $12,000, does she still need to file for tax?

Income reported in box 7 of form 1099-MISC is self-employed income.

As her self-employed income is more than $400, she is required to file a tax return. Her income is subject to self-employment tax calculated at 15.3% on 92.35% of her met self-employment income (after deduction of related expenses if any). As her income is below the standard deduction of $12,000, she has no income tax to pay.

If you are claiming her as a dependent, she has to indicate on her return that she can be claimed as a dependent by someone else.

Sorry that is self employment income.  You can enter Self Employment Income into Online Deluxe or Premier but if you have any expenses you will have to upgrade to the Self Employed version.

Or there is TheTurbo Tax Freedom website which is free for federal and state if you qualify.  And has more forms than the Federal Free Edition, like the full 1040 return and Schedules A, B, C , D, E, F, EIC, H, K-1, SE,  etc.
To qualify for the Tax Freedom website  you just need to meet one of these 3 things

AGI $34,000 or less
Active duty military with AGI of $66,000 or less
OR qualify for EIC (earned income credit)

In order to use the Tax Freedom Edition, you have to start it at a special website:

Do not sign in at the top.  Use the bottom I QUALIFY START NOW
and set up a new account or it will take you back to regular Turbo Tax.
