Possibly. You can deduct unreimbursed, out-of-pocket insurance premiums paid for policies that cover medical care.

Limitations:

  • Do not include any insurance premiums paid by an employer-sponsored health insurance plan unless the premiums are included in box 1 of the taxpayer’s (or spouse’s) Form W-2.
  • A taxpayer cannot deduct premiums paid by or through the Premium Tax Credit (Affordable Care Act).

You can deduct these on Schedule A (Itemized Deductions) if they exceed your standard deduction for your filing status, along with other thresholds. If the expenses on your Schedule A do not exceed your standard deduction, TurboTax will recommend the standard deduction. Here's how to make the entries:

  1. With your return open, search for Schedule A and then select the Jump to link in the search results.
  2. Answer Yes on the Did you have any medical expenses in 2019? screen.
  3. Enter your medical expenses.
