Solved

I am retired, I moved from CO to NM in Dec 2019. I did not register my car or to vote until Feb 2020. Which state do I claim first?

You will need to file a part-year state return. If you are required to file a New Mexico return, then I suggest that you prepare your former state of Colorado return first. If you did not earn income in New Mexico then you are not required to file a return for that state. According to the New Mexico Department of Revenue, you are required to file a New Mexico if both of the following are true:

    • You are required to file a federal return.

    • You have income from any New Mexico source whatsoever.
