I claimed a deceased parent by accident and need to remove it from my return

    If you have already filed the return, you must wait until the IRS either Accepts or Rejects the return before you can amend. Instructions for that process is found in this link: https://ttlc.intuit.com/replies/5624594


    If you have not filed the return, you can remove a dependent using these instructions:

    • On the Tax Timeline, select "Personal Info".
    • Scroll down until you see your dependent's name and click "Delete" next to it, this will remove the dependent from your return.


    You may also be able to continue to claim the parent as a dependent if the dependency tests are met: 

    "You can claim a deceased person on your income tax return only if you would have qualified to claim that person as an exemption on your return prior to his death. You can claim only a deceased person who met the criteria to be considered a qualifying relative or qualifying child."
