Question

I deleted Form 2210, tax penalty. I prefer IRS do that. Why did Turbo Tax add the penalty anyway to my 1040 tax owed???

Why did Turbo Tax add the penalty anyway to the tax due?  I deleted form 2210.

TurboTax added the underpayment penalty because the due date to file the return is also the due date to pay any taxes due.

However, when you go through the Underpayment Penalty information, you will come to a screen titled "Let the IRS Bill Me Later".  On that page you can click on the button "Let the IRS Bill Me Later" and this will prevent the penalty from being added to the return.  (See the screenshot below)

The option is available for individuals who want to go ahead and pay the penalty.  You can make the selection during the interview phase to have the IRS figure the penalty for you, and Form 2210 will not be included.  Follow these steps:

  1. Select Other Tax Situation
  2. Select Edit next to Under Payment Penalty
  3. Select Let the IRS figure the penalty for you
