Question

I did not know I had to physically sign the document until I discovered it was not sign I finally did sign it and dated

Do you have a question?  You don't have to actually sign anything if you efile.   Were you suppose to print and mail y our return?  Did your efile reject?

When you e-file there is no physical "signature" on the Form 1040.  You sign electronically by entering your 2018 AGI or PIN#.  If you choose to file by mail, then you have to sign the paper form next to the words "Sign here" before you mail it in.

Do I ? and if I do where do I sign the return?

@nanwaz To sign your federal Form 1040 look at the bottom of page 2 for the bold print that points to a line --it says 'SIGN HERE".   If you are filing a state return you will have to look for the line yourself since there are 37 states with a state income tax and their forms are all different.
