Question

I didn't pay Federal Income Tax for the whole past year

Hi! I noticed in my W-2 form that Federal Income Tax wasn't withheld from my paycheck the whole past year. But the year before it was, and I don't remember filling new W4 (I worked for the same employer). So I think that my employer did a mistake.  And now I have to pay Federal Income Tax for the whole last year of $5000 to IRS. And I can't qualify for the tax refund anymore because of that. Is there a way I can get my employer responsible for that and get help for them with this payment? I understand that I didn't notice that in my paychecks, but it's clearly employer's mistake.

Maybe your employer made a mistake.  To see if your employer can be responsible for paying some of your taxes is a legal issue.

You need to request a copy of the W-4 form that you completed last year (if you did complete one).  The only way your employer should be able to not make any  tax payments, is if you claimed you were exempt from withholding on your W-4.

According to the IRS regarding the W-4 form: To qualify for this exempt status, the employee must have had no tax liability for the previous year and must expect to have no tax liability for the current year. A Form W-4 claiming exemption from withholding is valid for only the calendar year in which it's furnished to the employer.

Please see the following for more information on filing exempt with your W-4.
