I don’t know how to file this year...

I bought a house with my boyfriend and I’m on the loan in 2019.  The house was primary purchased by him. We are not married but we live together. Even though he is the head of household, as he makes more money than me. I was also a full time student, 2019.  I took out loans and I’m currently paying those school loans. I also am able to file for the earned income credit because of the amount I made while I worked being a student. I purchased solar panels under my name for the house as well. I’m also a mother to one child. Would I benefit from filing jointly, or single? Once again, we are not married.

No. By law, you won't be able to use the Married Filing Jointly filing status because you are not married.

    • You may be able to file as Head of Household or Single.

You can qualify for Head of Household if you:

    1. Were unmarried as of December 31, 2019 and
    2. Paid more than half the cost to run your (or a qualifying parent's) home this year(rent, mortgage, utilities, etc.) and
    3. Supported a qualifying person.

After you answer all the questions about yourself and your dependents at the beginning of your return, we'll let you know if your situation qualifies for Head of Household.

You can also revisit these questions by selecting My Info (online) or Personal Info (software), and then selecting Edit next to your name or your dependent's.
