No, it is not like having a W-2 if you are working on your own.  Working on your own implies that you are self-employed and running your own business to provide your services as a caregiver.

You will need to have records of your income, such as bank deposits or copies of a receipt book showing that you gave receipts when you were paid in cash.  That will substantiate the income that you are claiming on your return.

Use the following steps to get started with Schedule C:

  • On the top row of the TurboTax online screen, click on Search (or for CD/downloaded TurboTax locate the search box in the upper right corner)
  • This opens a box where you can type in “schedule c” (be sure to enter exactly as shown here) and click the magnifying glass (or for CD/downloaded TurboTax, click Find)
  • The search results will give you an option to “Jump to schedule c
  • Click on the blue “Jump to schedule c” link

Also, see the following TurboTax articles for more information:

Am I considered self-employed?

How do I report income from self-employment?
