I don't understand how it says I owe $971 In federal taxes and that turns into $3788

What is "it" that says you owe $971? Where and when did the amount "turn into $3,788"?


If the IRS made changes to your federal tax return that increased the amount you owe, they will send you a notice telling you what they changed. If you already got a notice saying that you owe $3,788, that same notice probably tells you what they changed. Read the entire notice carefully.

Is this for 2023 or a prior year?  A difference of about 2,800 could be the 2021 3rd Stimulus payment.
