Question

I e-filed federal return. But when I try to change the option to e-file my NY State it only mail in option. Why is this? I don't want to mail it in. Takes too long

I am don't have any special circumstances with my taxes. I work and that's it. My domestic partner can e-file hers just fine and we don't have any different circumstances except slight difference in income.

As you'll see in that FAQ article that MarilynG1 provided above, you cannot efile the state return by itself until after the Federal return has first been accepted.   Unfortunately, due to late tax law changes the IRS will not even open up to start processing until February 12, 2021, except for a few returns they pull early for testing purposes. In the meantime your Federal return will sit on TurboTax servers with a "pending" status.  (You can check the status by logging in and looking at the Tax Home.)   So unless yours is one of the very few returns pulled early by the IRS, you won't know anything about acceptance or rejection until February 12 or soon thereafter.    Once the Federal return has been accepted, then you should be able to efile your state return.
