Question

I ended up owing this year for state. The new W-4 is confusing. What can I change so that I don't owe next year and that I get my normal refund?

Form W-4 is used to determine your federal tax withholdings.  Some states will use your W-4 information to determine your state tax withholding.  Other states require that you use their state form to adjust your tax withholdings.

Generally, if you claim single your withholdings will be higher than if you claim married.  Also if you claim the fewer dependents your tax withholdings will be higher.
