Question

I entered 21,268 of costs for adding a solar generating system to my house. Turbotax is calculating this as a $6,350 credit. Why isn't this number $6380 (30% of 21,268)?

The solar panel tax credit allows filers to take a tax credit equal to up to 30% of eligible costs. There is no income limit to qualify, and you can claim the credit each year you're eligible for it.

I'm not sure why there would be a $30 difference. Make sure you numbers are entered properly in TurboTax. I entered it in my program and it calculated $6,380.

Thanks for the reply. I guess it's just a mystery. Would you happen to know if there's a way to override a number at the end on the actual return? I took away the credit entry, then went back and did it again and got the same result.

If you are using a TurboTax desktop program, you may be able to edit that number in Forms Mode.

Click on "Forms" at the top right of your TurboTax screen to switch to "Forms Mode." And then scroll down your left panel to find the Form 5695 Residential Energy Credits.

In your right panel the form will display.

Did you go back to your screen in TurboTax where you entered it and delete all of the information and re-enter it? That may trigger a change.

You can do this as follows:

Click on the search icon in your upper right TurboTax screen

Type "residential energy credit" in your search box and hit enter

Click on the link "Jump to residential energy credit"
