Question

I filed my taxes individually/head of household but checked the "Click here if someone can claim you as a dependent". Was not claimed. Will I still get stimulus check?

You must have been pretty confused---you could not possibly be head of household if you are also a dependent on someone else's tax return.  If you said you can be claimed as someone else's dependent you will not receive a stimulus check.   You will need to prepare and file an amended return to fix that, and you will more likely get your stimulus money as a credit on your 2020 return next year.

Look at the top half of page 1 of your Form 1040 to see what you checked off for filing status and whether you could be claimed as a dependent.

Click on Tax Tools on the left side of the screen. Click on Tools. Click on View Tax Summary. Click on Preview my 1040 on the left side of the screen.

You can either be Head of Household or a dependent, not both. If you are eligible to be claimed as a dependent, you will not get the stimulus, regardless if anybody claims you.

Taxpayers likely won't qualify for an Economic Impact Payment if any of the following apply:

  • Your adjusted gross income is greater than
    • $99,000 if your filing status was single or married filing separately
    • $136,500 for head of household
    • $198,000 if your filing status was married filing jointly
  • You can be claimed as a dependent on someone else’s return. For example, this would include a child, student or older dependent who can be claimed on a parent’s return.
  • You do not have a valid Social Security number.
  • You are a nonresident alien.
  • You filed Form 1040-NR or Form 1040NR-EZ, Form 1040-PR or Form 1040-SS for 2019.
