Turbotax charges based on the complexity of the return, not the dollar amount of your income or taxes.  You user icon shows you are enrolled in the free version but maybe you are using a different account to comment from.  There are many levels of Turbotax, with and without live CPA assistance, and if you agree to be upgraded then you agree to pay.  Or, if you are self-employed, that will definitely require the most expensive version based on how they designed the program.

If your total income is less than $33,000, you can file using the TaxFreedom edition, also called the Free File Alliance version.  The name is unfortunately confusing.  The Free File Alliance version is sponsored by the IRS and includes self-employment and other forms not normally included in the "regular" free version of Turbotax. The IRS requires TaxFreedom to be a separate web site, and if you want to use it you will have to make a new account and start over from scratch. https://turbotax.intuit.com/taxfreedom/
