I got a 1099 NEC from my employer instead of a W2, can I report the income on the wages line? I should not need a schedule C as I do not own the business

To know how to handle the income, it depends on why you got the income. If this is in addition to a w2, we file it so you pay your share of the Medicare and Social Security tax. If this is instead of a w2, you are a contractor and need to pay both parts of the Medicare and Social Security tax. The only way to do that, is to file a sch C.
