I got a hospital bill on my debt from 2014 that the state was supposed to cover the bill

    You would need to contact the state agency and/or the hospital to resolve this with them.

     

    In the mean time, you have the right to attach a 300 word personal statement to your credit report, by contacting each of the 3 agencies.  You could explain the situation.  It won't change your number score, but it would be provided to any lender who requested your report.

     

    You can also file a formal dispute with the 3 credit bureaus over the debt, but you should probably try to resolve it at the source first. 

     

    However, start by getting your free credit report from all three agencies.  If the debt is only listed in one report and not all three, then it is more possible it might be a clerical error with one agency rather than a debt that is incorrectly reported by the original creditor. https://www.annualcreditreport.com/index.action
