I got married dec 23, 2016, however; I was asked "if I was married on 12/31/2016". I was married for only a few days. So, do I answer yes or no to the question?

You answer Yes to the question. It does not matter at all how long you were married. Even if you got married just before midnight on 12/31/2016, you are considered married for the whole year.
