Question

I got married in September, can I file as single since I was single for most of the year or do I have to file married?

No, you can not file as single. Even if you didn't get married until the last day of the year, you are considered Married for the entire year. You can file as Married Filing Jointly, if your spouse agrees, or Married Filing Separately. You can not file as Single.
