Question

I had $3,027.94 withheld for federal income, but I'm only getting back $200, why is so much kept?

I did get a $2,000 hiring bonus last year, but that was taxed.  Could that ha e affected it?  I'm unclear why so much was kept by the federal government when others got well over $1,000.

It really depends on how much you earned, your filing status, your tax rate and any credits you are eligible for.  For example, if you are single, no kids, not in school and take the standard deduction of $12,950 with an income of $35,000, your taxable income would be $22,050.  You would be in the 12% bracket with a tax of $2,440.50 (1,413 +1,027.5) If your employer withheld $2,640.50, you would only get $200.  ($2,640-2,440)

Your refund consists of the amount you paid in, plus refundable credits,  minus your tax liability plus non-refundable credits.  Everyone's tax situation is different.  Having a child, owning a home, having a little more withheld or a little less withheld, will all have an impact on your refund.
