Question

I have a cash liquidation in box 9 of the 1099-DIV. The software notes we will deal with this later, and then never does?

If you have an excess amount entered in Box 9 of Form 1099-DIV, it does not flow to your tax return. It should be entered as an investment sale in the same way you would enter a transaction reported on Form 1099-B.

To enter this in TurboTax you would:

    • Click on your Search icon in the upper right of your TurboTax screen
    • Type "Investment sales" in the search bar and click Enter
    • Click on the link  "Jump to Investment sales"
    • When you see the screen "Did you sell any investments in 202*?"  Answer "Yes"
    • When you see the question "Did you get a Form 1099-B..." answer "No"
    • Enter the name of broker that sent you the Form 1099-DIV
    • On the screen that says  "Now we'll walk you through entering your sale details" Indicate "Stock" (or something else if more appropriate)
    • Answer all of the follow-up questions to complete entering the details of the sale

Your TurboTax screen will look something like this:

Click here for Where do I enter investment sales?
