On 2015 return too, I had a net refund (State Refund greater than federal balance due) Then, TurboTax just asked me for net refund and bank account details. However this year I am being asked to pay the federal tax. What has changed? I filed extension and am now filing my taxes (Sept 10, 2017, same as last year)

Is it that I give the credit card / bank info, and then when it comes to state refund it will give me the net refund option?

Thank you

You cannot use either your federal refund to pay a state tax due, or use a state refund to pay federal tax due, if that is what you are asking to do.  That "net" figure you are seeing is just showing you the difference between the two figures.

If you owe the IRS then you need to pay the IRS the full amount due by whatever method you choose, such as a check, money order, or credit/debit card payment.
