The G in 1099-G stands for government.  If the paid family leave was through an insurance company, you would receive a 1099-MISC instead of a 1099-G.

Find out from your employer if the amount on the 1099-MISC is taxable and if it has already been added to your 2020 W-2.

You will report it as:

  • Federal
  • Wages and Income
  • Other Common Income
  • Form 1099-MISC
  • Fill in the screens and put the reason for the 1099-MISC as Sick Leave

If the amount on the 1099-MISC has already been taxed, then you will add another entry to cancel out the taxes on the 1099-MISC.

  • Federal
  • Wages and Income
  • Other Common Income
  • Form 1099-MISC
  • Fill in the screens but put a minue sign in front of the amount in Box 3, and put the reason for the 1099-MISC as Sick Leave - already been taxed

This will correctly report the 1099-MISC and make sure it is taxed properly.

How do I edit or delete a 1099-MISC?
