If you entered your income as an independent contractor on line 21 of your Form 1040 as miscellaneous income, then that was not the correct way to report your income.

Income from being an independent (private) contractor is considered to be self-employment income and should be entered on Schedule C, along with any expenses you had associated with your work.

Be sure to remove the entry you made if it was put in the wrong place.  Then, use the following steps to go to the Schedule C section to report your income and expenses:

  • On the top row of the TurboTax online screen, click on Search (or for CD/downloaded TurboTax locate the search box in the upper right corner)
  • This opens a box where you can type in “schedule c” (be sure to enter exactly as shown here) and click the magnifying glass (or for CD/downloaded TurboTax, click Find)
  • The search results will give you an option to “Jump to schedule c
  • Click on the blue “Jump to schedule c” link
