I am a resident of AL but worked for a few months last year in FL. My W2 from FL is has nothing in boxes 15-20 for state related things bc I do not live there. The error code says ""Total Alabama Wages, Form 40 Pg. 1, line 5, must equal the total amount of all State Wages (including Wages Earned Out of State) as reported in Box 16 of the Federal 1040 W-2." I keep getting that error message and now Turbotax is just telling me to contact IRS which is apparently impossible because they can't help me. I am only 21 and have no idea what I am doing so any help would be appreciated!!

Alabama Code AL40-050 is a rejection on your return because your total Alabama Wages must equal the total amount of all State Wages (including Wages Earned Out of State) as reported in Box 16 of the Federal 1040 W-2.

Since your W-2 does not have anything in Box 15-17, you must enter something in these boxes so your Alabama wages equal all your state wages (including Florida wages).

Please choose Florida in the dropdown box (Box 15) and enter their federal payer ID (as shown in Box b). Then, add your wages as shown in Box 1 in Box 16.

This will fix your error and you should be able to refile your return.

I am having the same issue, but my wages are from Tennessee. TN is not an option in the drop down menu for these boxes. How can I resolve this? Thanks!

Even though your wages are from TN, you could choose FL as the state in order to work around the AL error.  This should not affect anything in your return except for allowing the AL return to file without being rejected.

Enter FL as the state in the dropdown box, put the Federal ID number as the state ID, and enter your box 1 amount in box 16.
