Question

I have just filed my joint married 2022 tax return, which includes my daughter as a dependent. She worked some last year. How do I file a tax return on her behalf?

My daughter turned 19 on Oct 1, 2022. Turbotax says she still qualifies as a dependent. She worked some and needs to file a return, I assume.

You dont have to da anything to your return but she just needs to file as a single taxpayer and turbotax will ask her if she can be claimed on your return and the program will handled the rest.  Easy Peasy!!

If they deducted income taxes from her paycheck, whether or not she has to file, she most definitely should.  Assuming that was her only income, in your situation less than $4,400 as I recall, her standard deduction is greater than her income and she would have all the income taxes refunded to her.

If you have purchased a copy of Turbo Tax to do your taxes you can e-file up to 5 total returns.  So you can do her return on your copy of TurboTax.

As she is claimed as a dependent on your taxes her standard deduction will be

Dependents – If you can be claimed as a dependent by another taxpayer, your standard deduction for 2022 is limited to the greater of: (1) $1,150, or (2) your earned income plus $400 (but the total can't be more than the basic standard deduction for your filing status).

Hope this helps.

Thanks
