Question

I have lived with my now-wife in CA since 9/26/22. We were married on 12/16/22. What do we do for community income?? This is very new to me & I have no idea wtf to do...

See question
We have lived here since 9/26, but our incomes are very different. We are filing separately because she has some tax burden from a couple years ago to resolve, and doing so greatly minimizes amount due for both of us as a result.
If I understand community income correctly, half of all my withholdings belong to her and vice versa, but this seems absolutely ludicrous. I am looking for any help on how to do this to avoid trouble down the line. If you can provide an example I would really appreciate it. (it's fair to use simple number, e.g., pretend our income is something like 100k vs. 50k for simplicity)
Thanks!

If you are filing separate you only use your withholdings and same for her. Since you are filing married but separate taxes you are keeping everything separate. Once her tax burden is done you may change to married jointly and take advantage of some benefits. If you purchased your turbotax and downloaded it you have 5 separate tax filings, i would suggest to do each of you separate, but before filing it, do a married joint return and see how her tax issue from the past may or may not affect you and may see a benefit by doing a joint filing. No harm and you can see everything before you file.
