Question

I have never had state tax due. Why am I owing money this year, when status is the same?

No one can see your tax return so we cannot say why you owe the state this year.   First, check the amounts you entered from your W-2's---look at boxes 16 and 17 and see if you made any mistakes.  If those amounts are correct, then something else changed---maybe your state's tax rates increased, etc.   The usual reason for owing the state is not having enough withheld from your paychecks.  Print out your 2021 and 2022 state returns and lay them side by side to compare line by line to spot what is different.

If you work in one state and live in another, check that TurboTax imported the W2 information correctly. If not add it manually in forms. Turbo tax needs to have the tax amounts paid to each state entered. If not it can look like you owe more taxes to a state even though it was deducted. That just happened to me.

There are a variety of reasons why you may owe state taxes this year even though your filing status is the same as last year.

  • Your overall income may have increased. Did you have more sources of income?
  • Did the amount of money that your state withheld from your paycheck decrease?
  • You may no longer qualify for certain state credits or deductions.
