It depends. If your employer is listed on our Partner List, and you have the employer EIN (employer identification number) and the Box 1 (wages) amount of your W-2, you can usually import your W-2. If you can successfully import your W-2, then you do not need a paper copy to e-file.

However, depending on your employer, TurboTax might ask for the box D or Control Number from your W-2. This is something you can only get from your W-2 form.

If you are not able to import your W-2, you have to contact your employer for a copy.

If you are still unable to get your W-2 (after asking your employer for a copy), please follow the instructions below:

  1. Grab your last 2021 pay stub and call the IRS at 1-800-829-1040
  2. The IRS will ask you for some info before following up with your employer
  3. After notifying the IRS, you can either continue waiting for your W-2 or paper-file your return using Form 4852 and your last pay stub

Please see How do I import or enter my W-2 in TurboTax Online? for instructions on how to import or enter your W-2.
