Question

I'm active duty military. Our home of record is Oklahoma, but we're being charged VA state tax. I believe this is incorrect.

You are correct, you will not need to file a return for VirginiaYour question sounds like you’re married.  If that is the case, see the following FAQ (especially the Joe and Mary example):  https://ttlc.intuit.com/replies/3302300

You will still file an Oklahoma return.  Oklahoma just passed in 2016 a law that does allow active duty military pay to be excluded, but you may have had taxes taken out.  If this is the case, you will file to get a refund.

To remove Virginia from the return, please double-check the following entries:

In the Personal Info Tab.  Answer “no” to the question “Did you live in another state besides Oklahoma” and “no” to the question “Did you earn money in another state besides Oklahoma?”

Next, double-check your entries for your W-2 (screenshot at end of answer):

1.                 Sign in to TurboTax Online, click take me to my return, then pick up where I left off.

2.                 Click on Wages and Income, then Edit on your W-2

Scroll through the screens until Do any of these uncommon situations apply?  Make sure the Active Military Box is checked.  (Screenshot below)
